Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry Reviews

Read more

Review: The last time I was in the library, Jonathan Franzen written along a spine caught my eye. Why did I want to read this book? Where had I heard this name? The book looked brand new. However, most of its essays are from the late 90s and early 2000s. The political and social references are fascinating because they are now all in hindsight. Most (if not all) are pre-September 11th. They are all pre-current-economic-meltdown and new President Obama.

The essence of the essays are timeless. From... Read more

Review: Forget Nostradamus--Bellamy predicted shopping malls, credit cards and cars in his fictitious time-traveling story written in 1887 and looking forward to the year 2000 ("In the Year Two-Thousaaaannnnndddd....in the Year Two-ThousAAAAANNNNDDDD!")

Keeps switching tense, point-of-view, moves between first person perspective of multiple and conflicting characters over space and time. A real mind fuck and I'm only about 100 pages in... Still trying though. Fascinating actual historical stuff and actual conspiracy theory quoted documentation dating back centuries. The first fictional work, of which I'm aware any way, to tackle ... Review: The beauty of Kurzweil is that he really goes his homework before he authors a book.

Age of Spiritual Machines had more style to it but this book is very dense in terms of domain knowledge.

I miss the metalogue he had going with himself. Maybe I just like those voices in my own head. :-) Read more
