And that’s yet another book by Sonya Hartnett that really shouldn’t have sat in the “children’s” section of the bookshop. Incest, domestic violence, animal cruelty, you know all that good stuff you find on Play School.

I’m all seriousness though, it is good stuff. I absolutely love everything I read from Hartnett (as an adult) and this book was no exception. The only thing that made me rate this book 3.5 stars is my lack of connection to any of the characters. The only thing that made me rate this book 3.5 stars is my lack of connection to any of the characters. I felt sorry for Jordan but that’s about it. Beautifully written as always but just not as effecting as “Surrender” or “Of a Boy”. If you love this author already then pick up this book. If you haven’t tried anything of hers before pick up something else.

While I didn't *love* this book, I surprisingly didn't hate it.

The book was written pretty well. However, it had not much in the way of a plot line, but plenty of conflict and tension to keep anyone happy.

Not a bad book.

Sonya Hartnett is a powerful and unflinching writer.

She captures perfectly the processes by which abuse stays within a family.

She also outlines the brutality of abusers and those who support them.

Unfortunatelly, as all books with this subject, quite predictable and very dark and hopeless. (What do I expect, I know)
But vividly written, disturbing, violent, entertaining. I read it last night start to finish (it's a short book) and still thinking about it this morning...

Poignant, heart breaking.. a beautiful piece of writing.
Susan Fletcher
Unusual storyline and 'shocking' end - an engaging read though

One of the best books I have ever read! I recommend it to all YA readers and everyone who loves a good, gritty read.
Jo Dugan
An incredible bizarre, and at times twisted story that is beautifully written.

Jeg føler ikke at jeg kan gjenfortelle om denne boken er bra eller dårlig, det eneste jeg kan fortelle er at jeg overhodet ikke likte den.

Loved this. Reading this is one of those times I genuinely feel Australia being explored and communicated effectively through a text. Wonderful.
Alice Davies
A dark tale, but only a glimpse of a story that could have been a great one.
